A Marron Kompas Stichting is committed to supporting and promoting tribal peoples, with specific attention to the Maroon community. We believe in the power of cultural diversity and recognize the unique value of tribal traditions, knowledge and heritage.
Our mission is to strengthen the rights and interests of tribal peoples, preserve and promote their culture, and improve their living conditions. We strive for a just and inclusive society in which tribal peoples can make their voices heard and actively participate in decision-making processes that affect them.

Quinti
Meet the Kwiinti community, along the upper reaches of the Coppename River. Discover their variant of Sranan Tongo and admire their craftsmanship in woodcarving and basket weaving. Explore their traditional festivals, ceremonies and the role of the Gaanman, such as Gaanman Remon Clemes, in their community.

Okanisi (Ndyuka)
The Okanisi are the largest Maroon group in Suriname and have a rich cultural history that goes back to the time of slavery and their struggle for freedom. They live on the Tapanahony River, partly on the Lawa River, the Marowijne River and on the Sarakreek. The Aukaners have a strong community bond that is characterized by mutual support and solidarity.

Matawai
Explore the Matawai people, a proud Maroon group living in the enchanting interior of Suriname, along the Saramacca River. Learn about their language, which is closely related to Saramaccan, and discover their traditional medicine, rituals and musical expression. The Matawai people are led by a Gaanman, such as Gaanman Lesley Valentijn, who represents their community.

Paamaka
Discover the Paamaka, a Maroon community settled along the beautiful Marowijne River. Explore their language, traditions and architecture, and learn about their farming techniques and hospitality. Like other Maroon groups, the Paamaka have a Gaanman, such as Gaanman Jozef Misajere Forster, who leads their community.

Aluku (Boni)
Discover the Aluku community, also known as Boni, located in the beautiful Lawa area in the south of Suriname. Learn about their language, dances, music and the rich history of resistance against slavery and colonial rule. Like other Maroon groups, the Aluku also have a Gaanman, such as Gaanman Eugène DjuKham, who leads their community.
